White Ash LeafletsGroton State Forest, VermontBirth, life, and death - each took place on the underside of a leaf. - Toni MorrisonI have spent so many autumns in the Adirondacks that this last year I decided to go camping by myself in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, instead. It rained. It snowed. It got dark early. Get the picture. I got up at first light and decided to check out the view from Owl's Head. The gate was closed so I parked my car and walked. Soon I discovered that the road was freshly carpeted with white ash leaflets in soft yellows, peach and orange. Dew pearled on each leaf. I spent a nice chunk of time with these delightful leaflets and then continued my hike up the hill. Presently the Park Ranger drove by, followed by seven quickly moving cars which I later discovered was a photography workshop. I was still trekking up the hill when they passed me again going down. When I arrived at the overlook, the conditions were not favorable for quality shots. I was thankful that I had taken the slow route. That caravan didn't know what they had missed.
