Between A Rock and A Hard Place in America
The Hoh RiverOlympic National Park, Washington StateHere man is no longer the center of the workd, only a witness, but a witness who is also a partner in the silent life of nature, bound by secret affinities to the trees. - Dag Hammarskjold 1905-1961, Swedish diplomat and humanitarian Having friends in Port Angeles, Washington, who do not fly, has its advantages. Last year we spent two weeks visiting them and getting acquainted with Olympic National Park. We backpacked into the rainforest along the Hoh River. Every year the river floods and sweeps 500 year old trees out to the ocean. The first evening, while setting up camp, we heard the cry of an elk. The next day while exploring the river a quarter of a mile from camp, we discovered a dead elk - a fresh cougar kill. Cougar tracks were everywhere. That evening, it came back for seconds. This tree was trying to push up through the river rocks nearby.
