Pacific Balm
Maui, Hawaii I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in tune once more. ---John Burroughs 1837-1921 American naturalist I love finding beauty in the simplistic. I am fortunate to have a brother living on Maui. Once, I spent a week exploring the island by myself. It was heaven. I spent three days solo backpacking the Haleakala Crater. The Vermont woods are silent in the winter, but I have never experienced such stillness as the day I hiked in and out of clouds on a little used trail on the back side of the crater. Another day, I visited a small upcountry arboretum in the rain. I had the place to myself. This philodendron is one token of that day.

Splendor in the Earth
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Utah Which of us is not sometimes affected, almost to despair, by the splendid vision of earth and sky. - John Keble 1795-1812 English clergyman Sunrise. Out of breath after struggling to the top of a sand dune, I gasp again, seeing the beauty of this rock and untouched sand surrounding it. This photo is just a section. This jutting island of folded, striated sandstone was almost buried by a constantly shifting dune. Funny how such splendor can bring tears to one's eyes.

Goblin Sunset
Goblin Valley State Park, Utah I only went out for a walk And finally concluded to stay out Until sundown, For going out, I found, Was really going in. - John Muir 1838-1914 U. S. naturalist I know, Sunsets are so overdone. But I had to share this hoodoo sunset with you. Hoodoos - or goblins - are columns of eccentrically shaped rock, produced by weathering from wind and water. What a mysteriously, wonderful place to wander under the light of the moon.

Russet Rumor
Autumn Fern Adirondacks, New York It will talk as long as it wants, this rain. As long as it talks I am going to listen. - Thomas Merton 1915-1968 American writer and Trappist monk

Acceptance
Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, California I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do. - Willa Cather 1876-1947 American novelist I always appreciated these ancient, rugged trees. But it was not until I spent a day and night among them that I really fell in love with the Bristlecone Pine. Somehow, even though they were on my list, I never visited the Bristlecones when I lived in California. So on the infamous, September eleventh, we flew out to drop in on the Sierras and them. That flight is a story in itself. We ended up driving from Chicago, cutting our vacation short. Spending time among the Bristlecones was a beautiful place to begin the healing process. I cherish the opportunity of viewing them in the light of the setting and rising sun.

Bloom Where You Are Planted
Little Wild Horse Slot Canyon, Utah The faintness of the stars, The freshness of the morning, The dewdrop on the flower, Speaks to me. - Chief Dan George 1899-1981 Native American-Salish, logger, actor, and poet Someday, I will have a show titled Subtle Beauty. This photo may be part of the exhibit. When I displayed at quality craft fairs, I always hung a few photos that I liked but knew would not be big sell items. I always connected strongly with those people who saw the same beauty I did in such photos. These flowering grasses where growing out of a crack, head high, on a vertical wall of Little Wild Horse Slot Canyon. I loved the tenacity of the plant and the way the blossoms picked up the pink in the rock.

Chalice
Maui, Hawaii There is not a single colour hidden away in the chalice of a flower, or the curve of a shell, to which, by some subtle sympathy with the very soul of things, my nature does not answer. - Oscar Wilde 1854-1900 Irish playwright, poet, and writer I spent a peaceful dawn on a Maui beach shooting trees, flowers and sand formations. A few other people were walking the beach. Some questioned me, not believing I was just taking photos of nature. I do not know if they thought I was paparazzi getting the scoop on some star ... or maybe they thought I was voyeuristic. The next beach over was a nude beach.

Compensation
Coral Pink Sand Dune State Park, Utah For all the toll the desert takes of a man it gives compensation, deep breaths, deep sleep, and the communion of the stars. - Mary Austin 1868-1934 American writer

Tenderness
N.E. Kingdom Sunrise, Vermont Nay, in some sense, a person who has never seen the rose-color of the rays of dawn crossing a blue mountain twelve or fifteen miles away, can hardly be said to know what tenderness in colour means at all... - John Ruskin 1819-1900 English critic and essayist Was this the morning I awoke to a moose ten feet from my tent. I was camping by myself in Far Out Field on a friend's farm in the N.E. Kingdom. What can I say. It is a magical place.

Morning Dance

Between A Rock and A Hard Place
The Hoh River Olympic National Park, Washington State Here man is no longer the center of the workd, only a witness, but a witness who is also a partner in the silent life of nature, bound by secret affinities to the trees. - Dag Hammarskjold 1905-1961, Swedish diplomat and humanitarian Having friends in Port Angeles, Washington, who do not fly, has its advantages. Last year we spent two weeks visiting them and getting acquainted with Olympic National Park. We backpacked into the rainforest along the Hoh River. Every year the river floods and sweeps 500 year old trees out to the ocean. The first evening, while setting up camp, we heard the cry of an elk. The next day while exploring the river a quarter of a mile from camp, we discovered a dead elk - a fresh cougar kill. Cougar tracks were everywhere. That evening, it came back for seconds. This tree was trying to push up through the river rocks nearby.

Hoarfrost
Hoarfrost - Frozen Dew North Bennington, Vermont The frost performs its secret ministry Unhelped by any wind. - Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772-1834 English poet

Autumn Victory
Autumn near Inlet, N.Y. in the Adirondacks

Rhythm in Green
Maui, Hawaii A somethig in a summer's noon, An azure depth, a wordless tune, Transcending ecstasy. - Emily Dickinson 1830-1886, American poet These ferns were dripping down a roadside bank in Maui. It was a beautiful day with an azure sky and puffy white clouds. Luckily, one covered the sun long enough for me to take this photo of two of my favorite subjects - ferns and green.

Turning Leaves
Adirondacks, New York Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn. - Elixabeth Lawrence, American writer It is funny how intimately one gets to know one's subjects when photographing. Since you are in the moment, one tends to remember all the nuances of each plant, flower, rock or leaf. Years afterwards, when returning to the same location, I greet the item and check on its condition. So I find it interesting, that I can not tell you exactly where this photograph was taken. I know it was taken in the Adirondacks. I wish each of you could experience a nature photography workshop, It is so funny to hear the oooh's, ahhh's and gasps of delight as sixteen people fan out through the woods looking for beauty. We call such sounds, leaf 'gasms or flower 'gasms. I think this photo must have been taken at an incredible leaf orgy at the edge of Stillwater Reservoir. Some days you hit enchantment. This was such a time and place. The leaves were colorful, fresh and wet. Everywhere you looked was another prize winning photograph. We have stopped at the same spot annually for nine years. Every other year we soon got back into our cars and traveled on. This year we stayed.

Zen
Dead Branch in Water and Its Reflection Moss Lake, Adirondacks, New York My heart is tuned to the quietness that the stillness of nature inspires. - Hazrat Inayat Khan Its 6:00 A.M. on an autumn morning. The surface of the lake is a mirror. I love the simplicity of this photo. P.S. Turn it on its side and it looks like a deer with antlers.

Autumn Flow
Autumn Leaves Reflected In A Brook Adirondacks, New York Autumn evening --- Knees in arms, Like a saint. - Kobayashi Issa 1763-1827, Japanese Haiku poet I love hunting for the best of autumn reflections. What a great excuse to splash along a stream bank, bobbing up and down like a blue heron.

Golden Assets
Reflections of Autumn Leaves Whetstone Gulf State Park, New York Since the whole world Cannot buy A single spring day, Of what avail To seek yellow gold. - His Pei Lan, Ch'ing Dynasty poet ----unless this is the yellow gold you are searching for. looking down into Banff
Looking down into Banff from this overlook provided me with a calm appreciation for this wilderness area. Aspen trees such as the one in the foreground of the photo, added a nice contrast to other tall fir trees. Granite Mountains surround all of Banff as if to protect it from harm.

Canadian Rockies
On the return trip from Banff this fall, I was totally awed once more, by this majestic snow capped mountain range. The quiet stream appeared to be flowing into Banff . Oh if only I could go back with you I thought. There were so many lovely places I had not photographed yet.

Where Eagles Flew
On a drive back from Banff this fall we spotted an Eagle dipping in and out of this majestic Canadian mountain range.By the time we were able to stop the car, the eagle was no longer in sight. However, the formation of the mountain and the lovely stream below it, were all that was needed to keep me focused for some time.
